Motor Mounts Empty
PostSubject: Motor Mounts   Motor Mounts EmptyWed Dec 03, 2008 9:29 pm

OK, here's a new subject. Motor mounts.
I have tried two different sources for new motor mounts for my 59 Star Chief with the 389 v8 2bbl.
Both are incorrect.
The first set: the single mounting hole is larger than the originals and the left and right are different, where as the originals, both are the same and could be used on either side. These also are angled differently.
The second set: mounting hole is larger and again they are not the same and angled differently. Also different from the first replacements.
See pictures.
Napa shows one number for just the left, nothing for the right. Their picture is similar to one of the replacements I got that is incorrect.
What am I missing here? Are the ones I am getting for the Bonny or Catalina and do not fit on the Star Chief maybe?

The ones from NAPA fit fine on mine and looked just like the originals. They fit either side also. I'll get the part number if you want it.

That would be great. I can compare it to the ones that NAPA here is showing me, which dont look correct. Thanks.

Do your old ones look like my old ones?

Do you have a picture of them?

My old ones were identical to my NAPA ones. Same size bolts and everything. I'll get you some pics along with that part number.

I ordered 2 and they sent me 3 so if you need one I have an extra.

Excellent! I really appreciate that.
I have been emailing with Peter at Ames in NH and he has sent me pictures of the ones they sell to fit this car. They seem to be correct although I have asked him to measure the single threaded mounting hole to see if it matches up correctly. Nice of NAPA to send an extra. Hopefully I wont have to take you up on your very generous offer. I'll let you know. Thanks again.

hmmmm, well, I'm on my third set of motor mounts and these dont look like the ones I took off either.
I dont get it.
Anyone come up with any thoughts on this?
How about that NAPA part number?
See how the angle of the rubber on top is so different? It angles the wrong direction. And one has a metal tang sticking out of it on the bottom.

Now you have me really thinking. I know I saved one of my old ones and I know I have an extra NAPA one. I'll let you know what I find.

wydtrac.....I got mine from Ames a couple years back. You are correct that both sides should be the same. Some later years used different left and right mounts. It seems that the replacements use a larger bolt then the originals. (5/8th vs 9/16 I think) I know I had to get new bolts and ream the holes in the frame tabs slightly for them. The shape should not matter as long as the three bolt holes are the same in relation to each other. Hope this helps.....John

These pictured came from ames. The single threaded hole is larger on these than on the old ones and the left and right are not the same as they are with the old ones. The angle of the rubber on top is what bothers me. I dont think it will line up properly. I will have to get under it and try the fit.

PostSubject: Oil pan and motor mounts   Motor Mounts EmptyWed Jan 07, 2009 9:37 pm

Well, she's all back together with a nice pontiac blue oil pan and motor mounts that dont look anything like the old ones but fit just fine.
With a little help the pan fit good and isn't leaking. The motor mounts work good with the only change being the larger bolts holding the mount to the frame. Interesting that the hole for this bolt was oval shaped and it was not necessary to drill it out larger. But, everything is back in place and she started up nice and no leaking from the oil pan or the replaced water pump. So were good to go. Oh, except the next day I went in and took the transmission pan down to change the oil and clean the screen. Fourteen of the fifteen bolts came out with no problem. The last one broke off and I will have to use an ezout on it. Thats ok, we have another 3 months of this damn cold and snow to live with so it will give me something to do besides watch football! cheers
