Fuel Gauge Wiring Questions

Doing a complete rewire on a 59 Catalina. Using an EZ wire harness, the origional was bad, bad, bad.
I have 2 questions regarding the fuel gauge.
1) Which terminal is for hot and which is for the sender?
2) Is it supposed to have full battery voltage or, is it supposed to less than 12 volts?
I spaced and forgot to see which sonnector went to which side of the gauge when removing the dead harness. I do know the gauge was fed from the ignition switch and the connector was kind of melty as if it had high resistance. That made me think it may have been a resistor wire.

chuckwp.....the terminal on the gauge closest to the passenger side of the car gets full 12 volts from the ignition switch "run" terminal. The terminal closest to the driver side goes to the sender. The sender alters the voltage to ground that the gauge sees......John
