| thats alot of cars guys! My list is pretty small. 1979 trans am-sold for parts, tooo much bodywork to be done, was my first car
1986 dodge D-100 truck - gave to my brother in law to "borrow" never got back, went to the crusher. Was just a beater anyways
1996 Honda Civic - Was the wifes when i met her,I hated that car, would touch it and would fall apart (good engines though)
2003 Chrysler PT cruiser - 2.3L turbo, fast car, lots of room. Later down the road its getting matte black paint, steelies, and an old style roof rack.
And of course the 1959 Pontiac Laurentian- 3rd owner, all original. Love this car, a blast to drive, and its funny how people just stop in their tracks and stare.

| Good to see you younger guys enjoying the cars that got me started. By the way I'm 36 years past 20 so my list is more ancient. First car (1969), 1955 Chevy 2 dr with trans planted 350 hp solid lifter tri-power (Chevy) 348/3speed on the floor. Rusted so bad the front seat was a rocking chair. Never lost a race once I understood how to tune it. It had a solid linkage for the three dueces. I would disconnect the bar to the end carbs while driving around. If asked about the engine I would tell them it was the stock 265 with a cam. Once challenged we would meet on a back road, I would jump out and hook up the end carbs. They always had the deer in the headlights look when they saw the 3 air cleaners and me hooking up the trips. Probably freaked 'um out and helped me win the races as much as the car did. Heh, my bad, LOL. next (circa 1970) 1964 ex police 2 dr sedan Catalina 389 2 bbl three on the tree. Dropped a '65 goat 389/muncie 4 speed in and added 3.90 gears. Fast and fun, had giant aluminum finned front brakes, could swear I pulled the back tires off the ground in a panic stop once. Well seemed like it at the time, LOL. Buddy got drafted (for Nam, circa 1971) and sold me his tired '64 Goat sedan. Stepped off the bus at physicals day for the Army, stepped wrong on the curb and broke his ankle in 4 places. For some reason did not want him anymore. It was his left ankle so he could not use a clutch and I kept the car. Dropped a '69 GP 428 370 hp mated to the goat muncie and had lot of fun with that thing. Open rear (non posi) made getting off the line difficult but once rolling look out. Sold it later. Bought brand new Feb. 1972, '72 Lucerne Blue/white striped Trans Am. Off the show room floor. Only 21XX Trans Ams made that year due to GM strikes. Could not even drive it before buying it. I was still only 19 (birthday is Sept. Born in '52) and had to have my Dad sign for permission to buy it. Got it down to 13.35 @ 105 ( good for those days with a fairly stock car) before trading it in on a '74 Vega wagon--yeah I know, it was the first gas crunch and everyone paniced, including my wife. But i still have her and the Vega is long rusted away. The Vega was ordered Sept. '73 didn't get it until Christmas eve '73 because of--you guessed it--GM stike. After the Vega (which showed rust in the fenders in the first 4 months and GM would not do anything so I sold it--after only 6 months ownership. )I bought a '68 Buick Gran Sport GS 400 and that was nice, nice car. Sorry for the long post. I'll shorten up. While I still owned the TA I found a barn '58 Starchief parked in a barn. It needed a valve spring repaired but otherwise ran very well up to about 3500 rpm. Yes ran normal until the valve would float. Sold it to some neighbor kids across the street. old the GS and bought a '63 Pontiac Ventura ex race car turned street car. The original 421 tri power 376 hp engine was blown and only the block was left. A 389 was in it. The owner want to keep the 389 so i found a '69 RAIII 400 from a Goat, rebuilt it and added a '65 tri power. This was a 4 speed car and that thing was great, what a sound when those trips opened. I started a Gasser build on it. Had the floor/firewall cut out to move the engine back under the dash, tilted the metal front end (neat story on that if anyone's interested) but bought a house and had nowhere to move the in progress build. No body wanted a cut up '63 Catalina so I had to junk the body. Bought a '69 Verdoro Green Pontiac Tempest Custom S from my brother in law. 350/350 trans. Then a '72 Firebird Formula 455 Ram Air, 455 HO, M-22 car. My first power intended engine build. All the goodies at the time. Traded it for-- 1976 KZ900--wow what a bike (for it's day). Bought a '78 Buick Turbo regal (first year with a 2 bbl turbo V6--not many sold with the 2 bbl). Pulled the V6 after playing with it for a while and built a killer Buick 455 for it. Fast--fast car. (Got a story about selling it also). 1978 Pontiac Bonneville 4 dr (notice the getting older trend here??) 301 auto (what can I say). Bought a 1978 Toyota Celica hatchback, 5 speed 4cylinder. great car. Bought a '81 Nissin (then called a Datsun) Maxima (not sure on the year any more) 5 speed. traded it for a new '86 GMC conversion van. Then a '87 Olds 98 (early front drive Olds) ex salesman car with mucho miles but looked and ran great. Traded it for a new '89 Ford F 250 HD to pull a 32 ft fifth wheel. Traded it for a new '91 Ford Mustang 5.0 LX hatch/5 speed. Added a '67 2 dr sedan chevy nova to the mix and built a 377 (chevy 400 block/350 crank) ran 12.0 at 110 before finding my '73 TA in a barn all dissassembled for restoration. Owner lost interest and wanted it gone. Got it home in boxes. Still have it, can see it at http://www.americantorque.com/page/0/62/ look thru the 3 pages about the car and it's history with me. Bought an '93 Olds cutlass wagon. '93 BMW 318is for the wife. GMC 2500 turbo deisel I still have and carried me and my stuff all down to Phoenix after retirement. And my last buy is a 2002 Pontiac SSEi, still owned. What brings me to this board? I'm looking at getting back to an early big car. Just looked at a '60 sdr sport sedan Starchief in darn good shape. I've always wanted to get back to a '64 Catalina but this '60 is awesome. There ya have it. A long time old fart auto sufferin' fool that can't stop. I think I got 'em all. Have to rest my digits for a while. Mark L Bought | |

| Damn sounds like you've had a blast!!!! Keep the stories coming!
It must have been nice when you could find all these "old cars" easily and find a 428 motor to swap into another car wasn't a big deal. haha
I'm obsessed with old school stuff. I wish I could cruise around in the 50s and 60s listening to Buddy Holly. Must have been really neat. Even like Dazed and Confused or Two Lane Blacktop. I cruise around nowadays and all I see are shit boxes that all look the same. SUCKS
Get that '60 Star Chief! You just missed a guy selling a '59 Star Chief 2dr Sedan with a tri power on here. I wish I could have bought it.

| Hey Robert. Are you on the Pontiac Zone board.? I can tell you those were the days. I went with a friend to the Mopar nationals a couple of years ago riding in his modified '64 Dodge Polara 500. We went from Wisconsin to Columbus Oh. As we returned thru a little town in Ill, it was dusk and we were driving thru the down town area. They were celebrating something locally with fireworks and the whole town was alive. We were just cruising along about 15 mph in second gear, all the activity around us and other cruising/hot cars around us. He had an old tape on the radio a the song came on from our days of Viet Nam. I was never there but my friend spent 3 years over there. The song I belive is by War and it goes--war, huh, what is it good for, absolutely nothing. Sorry I can't remember the name of the song, never can remeber song names. We both looked at each other and got goose bumps. It was an undescribable feeling of falling back to 1973. I still get those flashbacks when certain songs come on the radio. Specially if I'm driving a car at the time. It'll snap me right back to that time. Can tell you exactly where I am and what car I'm driving. One of the good things about growing up back then. Just wanted to add thanks for a great board and for having me as a participant. This kind of board can go along ways toward others getting the bug and being able to do something about it. Mark L

| I mentioned the tilt front end on the '63 Catalina Ventura. I had the engine out so I sat inside the closed engine bay and drilled thru the hood to fender flanges. I added a washer between the hood and fender ( to maintain the factory gap) and bolted 5/16 bolts thru, making the front end one piece. I think I eventually cut the front fender behind the front wheelwell straight across the fender line but I remember pulling the fender bottom out so I could tilt the front when I showed it to my brother, so I'm not sure about that. I know I did it on my '67 Nova with a one piece fiberglass front end so I may be thinking about that. Heres the neat part. I took the original '63 hood hinges, inverted them, bolted them on top of the frame horn but under the radiator core right where it bolts to the frame horn, and bolted it in. To open the front end you pulled the rear pins at the cowl and the lower fender, stood at the front of the grill, lifted at the top of the front grill. The hinges were articulated in such a way that the whole assembly would actually lift up before tilting forward. This lifting action accomplished 2 things. It helped the front apron clear the bumper by lifting up and over the bumper and it lifted the whole assembly up off of the pins. Then as it reached the top of the lift it would continue its action by tilting forward. I kept the heavy original hood springs attached and these aided in the whole action. I sure wished I had taken a picture and I would have to actually handle a hinge to see the orientation that I used. I looked at the hinges on the 1960 Starchief that I looked at Saturday and I think the hinges are a little different from what I remember of the '63 hinges but not at all certain. I know it sounds funny but it worked. And worked well. The only bad thing was for it to work I had to use all the original sheet metal pieces to keep everything solid and for it to work. I couldn't remove anything to save weight. But the tilt front was cool. Mark L

| Sorry, back then I couldn't afford the chisel to Flintstone it into a stone, heh! Sorry I couldn't describe the tilting mechanics better but it worked really well. Not much effort at all to do. If I should buy this '60 or get an early '60s again it will most likely be one of the first mods. I had some pics of the '63 in my old files but I just lost the complete hard drive--again--in 3 years and my son is trying to recover all the data. If we get it back I'll try you find them. Had some pics on the '72 TA, the '57 Starchief (which I think was actually a Chieftan???) and a pic or two of the '72 Formula 455 HO as it was when I traded it for the KZ900. When I junked the '63 I kept all the wiring and many many parts including the complete rear end from it. The rear was Dana Posi with 3.64 gears. I changed the perches and bolted it into the '72 Formula. The rear was much wider so I bought a set of fiberglass large bubbled rear quarter panles to cover the wide tires sticking out. I traded the fiberglass factory formula hood for a plain metal one. The factory fiberglass is heavier than a complete metal one. I stripped out the under support of the metal hood and made an early pro stock type snorkle out of sheet metal and bolted it on. Actually turned out not half bad (slapping ones self on his back). The Formula was in primer when I traded but I do have a pics somewhere if I get my files back. Robert I thought I recognized your avatar and cars from Pontiac Zone. Good talking at ya. Will have to try out the other site you mentioned. I'm still pondering the '60. Actually ready to buy, just getting my wife on board. that's the hard part. By the way, I also made a tilt front end on the '57 as well but never used the car before selling it to get the '63. By the way. Notice a tilt front and Pontiac trend here? Or is that just my imagination???? Mark L | |

| Forgot to add I bought an '89 Toyota Supra Turbo a couple of years ago. Bought it in Wisconsin but it was an Arizona car. In beautiful shape and the previous owner had it painted in a Jaguar deep blue. I played with the boost and promptly blew the head gasket. It's been sitting now for 3 years. I've got all the good stuff to build the 3.0 engine but while in Wisconsin (no emmissions testing where I lived) I planned install a built Pontiac 400 and a 2004R trans from a GN. My mock up 400 is still sitting in it with the 2004R but now that I've moved to Phoenix I don't think I can get it to pass any emmisions test. But down here if the car is 25 or older and you get collector insurance for it you don't have to test it. So maybe I'll sit on it, continue with the install and be able to drive it in 5 years. Nice talking at ya. Mark L | |

those Supras can be fast. Shit with a 400 in that little ass car, that'd be scary fast

| Hi Robert. Yes that was me. I still want to do this but I can't pass emmissions with an engine transplant. AZ says cars 25 and older can register for classic car licenses if you buy collector car insurance and abide by those rules. Then you can license it and you don't have to meet or test for emmisions. Being it is an '89 I have to wait 4 years. BUT!!. That gives me plenty of time to work on the combination. Now that I am courting this '60 I may have to put the Supra up for adoption. But I'm OK with that. I still have my extra 400 mock up motor and the 2004R sitting in it. How do you post a pic? I have several pics of the 400 and trans sitting in the engine bay showing the clearences around the motor. I'm not too adept at posting pics. Mark L | |

Right now the easiest way to post pics is to get a photobucket account and upload your pictures into there, and then copy and past the IMG link into our forum over here.
