Radiator Empty
PostSubject: Radiator   Radiator EmptyWed Feb 13, 2013 11:29 pm

For the love of Pete, does anyone know where to find a radiator for these cars?? These, like the aluminum trim, must be made of "Unobtainium"....they are nowhere to be found. The trim I can understand, but no radiators? Nobody, I mean, nobody makes a direct replacement for these cars..at all. Several manufacturers that I have contacted, don't even have a listing or 1959 and '60 or are skipped completely.

Some tell me one can be custom made, with prices from $650- over $1000. There must be one out there somewhere. Each and everyone of the used ones I've found are too far gone to be rebuilt or they want $600+ the rebuild it, with no guarantee they can, because of its age.

Mine is the original for the car and is so thin, sneezing or farting in its vicinity, causes it to leak.

Now for the questions; Is there a secret stash? Does anyone know of an interchangeable unit that will fit and at the very least, look correct?

This is not some rare trim part or fender, for say, a Tucker, but a radiator, that every car has to have. It baffles the mind why I cannot find one...anywhere.

Chad

I too had no success in finding a so-called correct radiator. My patience had run out and I wanted a driveable car so I told the radiator shop guys to find me a match as best they could, just make it heavy duty. Installed it and with all the scrutiny and so-called constructive criticism that "car guys" are quick to offer, I've only had one person comment on the radiator. And that was because he operated a radiator shop.

This is kind of what I want to hear...but, what did they find for you? Do you have a part number? Size? What car was it for?....at this point, any information is better than what I have come up with.

I used Rodney Red when I redid my 59 10 yrs ago. I sent them my old radiator and they custom made an aluminum on with dual electric fans. pretty slick and 0 problems with fitment or performance. If my memory reminds me it was around $600 plus $200 for the fans. Www.rodneyred.com

Chad,
I checked my records and unfortunately the work order didn't have any meaningful info on my replacement radiator. Also, no model number is visible on the radiator (at least I couldn't find one), it probably is on the side which is covered by the mounting bracket. Sorry that I can't offer more.

Okay..I found a guy here in Milwaukie, Oregon, near Portland, that has agreed to recore my radiator of $400. And get this, with a guarantee...for life!

He's not only the best around, but the only one who would touch it. He is going to hot tank it to remove every bit of 50+ plus years of paint, grime, rust, scale, well you get the idea...and fix the few small dents in the top tank.

I called every shop within a 100 mile radius and nobody, I mean nobody wanted to even look at it! I have heard nothing but great things about him, so I feel I'm in good hands.

Wish me luck!
