Painting info Empty
PostSubject: Painting info   Painting info EmptyWed Nov 27, 2013 12:03 pm

Hey gang... I know this isn't really technical but do we have any painting gurus in our little group? I haven't painted a car since the mid 90's so I guess I'm out of the loop quite a bit on painting materials.

Yesterday I asked my PPG dealer if she was mixing the test samples for my interior in enamel or lacquer and I got a very ugly look from her. Apparently lacquer is a bad word these days?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the paint options for color coats are:
Enamel
Eurethane
Epoxy
Water-based

Correct?

Are the options the same for primers?

What base coat can be used with what color coats?

Does anyone know of a good book or video covering all this?

I know enough to put any body filler onto bare metal, then use self etching primer on bare metal, followed by multiple layers of primer, LOTS of blocking before the color coat, color coat, color sanding, clear coat, final wet sand, then buff to a mirror finish.

What I don't know is what materials can be used together, and which ones will react with each other.

Thanks!

Michael

Since I'm sure someone will ask what I'm using to apply the paint, I recently bought new HVLP paint guns from Eastwood along with other painting supplies.

I started off with Eastwoods Evolution Gun with 3 additional tips/needles so I have one gun with 1.2, 1.4, 1.7, and 2.0mm needles, and a 600cc teflon coated aluminum cup.  These guns can spray anything including water based paints.

I then added:

Another Evolution spray gun that comes with a 1.4mm needle.

Stands for each Evolution spray gun

DeKups adapters for each Evolution spray gun

One 34 oz Dekups starter kit

And a couple cans of injected cleaner to help with clean up

For the record, I love most of Eastwoods products.  They do have some things that are outrageously priced but for the most part they have quality products at a decent price.  For instance I paid $70 (on sale) for the basic Evolution spray gun which I think is a great price for the quality.  Oh yeah, if you buy anything from eastwood, drop the extra change to become a buyers club member.  You get free shipping for everything except oversized items.  This has paid for itself 4 times over for me already.
