PostSubject: Need some side panel trim pieces for Bonneville   Thu May 29, 2008 3:00 am

I'm nowhere ready to install it but it's the only piece that I don't know where to get. I need the drivers side fender trim piece and possibly the door trim. I have the door trim but it has a crease in it and I don't think I can fix it.

I also need 1 USED rear quarter panel bullet. I have the other 7. I found a source for new castings but they won't match the old ones. All new ones will cost a lot.

Oh, it's a 2-door coupe.

I would just try junk yards. Be careful at junk yards though, I got the two corner trim pieces above the headlights at a junk yard. The guy assured me they would shine back up. I found out that a lot (if not all) of the trim on 1959 Pontiacs is anodized aluminum, NOT stainless. So once it dulls you can either get it reanodized or chrome plate it. I doubt either method is cheap.

What do you mean by quarter panel bullet? Is that what you call the rectangles on the bonnevilles?

Annodizing doesn't cost too much. And I've noticed that too about the trim. A lot of mine needs to be "cleaned up" because of the dulling.

Shadly, your best bet is to do the junkyard searches. evilBay has a lot of '59 parts too if you can get them without spending a small fortune.

I don't think our junkyards are like your junkyards Very Happy I'd be LUCKY to see a vehicle from the '70s, let alone the '50s.

I've been keeping my eye on eBay for stuff. I've actually been buying a lot lately. I got a SWEET bonneville key and keychain set, some NOS stamped repair panels and an original '59 color chip chart. Still no trim though. I've been looking for ways to make trim. Eastwood has a nice trim hammer and anvil set. I'm sure I can "create" some Bonneville trim from trim from another car. Yeah, those square things are called bullets. You Starchief guys have stars where we have bullets.

ALL of the trim is aluminum? I could have sworn some of it was stainless. Oh well, I'm not on trim yet. I've done aluminum trim work on a Mercedes before. You can actually polish the anodized coating on aluminum to brighten it up. If it's stained, you can polish off the coating and get it re-anodized. You do need to re-anodize if you do any repair work. Anodizing is actually cheap if you do the aluminum polishing yourself. The plating guys will probably do it better though.

I don't know if it's ALL aluminum but I know that most of it is.

Where are you located?

Shady1: For your front fender & door side trim pieces, keep watching Ebay. These items frequently show up there. By the way, these are stainless pieces and you can polish them yourself. Use wet/dry sandpaper. Depending on the existing scratches, start with 600 (for worse case) or 800. Keep the paper wet. (I used a small bowl for the water but take care to clean the bowl & use fresh water with each change of paper grade) Sand out the existing scratches. Then graduate to 1000, 1500, and 2000 (in turn). Apply the successive grades just to remove scratches from the previous coarser grade. Rinse off the piece being polished before changing to the next grade paper so the residue from the previous (coarser) paper will not be carried over. After the 2000, final polish the item with Mothers paste polish. Done with care the pieces should turn out looking like new.
The aluminum trim items are more of a problem. On other boards some have covered polishing alum. trim. Try the PY board. Do a search.
The qtr. panel 'bullets' are chrome plated "pot metal" and are subject to pitting. You have only three choices: NOS, NORS, or replating. All are expensive. The only alternative is to luck across used pieces that are acceptable to you.
