Ancient 1959 history Empty
PostSubject: Ancient 1959 history   Ancient 1959 history EmptySun May 25, 2008 9:45 pm

Although I've never owned a 59 Pontiac and it is unlikely that I ever will, these cars had a huge impact on me at an early age and I still think they are perhaps the most beautiful cars ever built. I was 10 years old in 1959 when our family moved to Columbus, OH so my Dad could begin his career at the Ohio State University Print Shop. One of his co-workers, Harry Hill, was a pressman there and Harry sold Pontiacs on the side for a very small Pontiac dealership in southern Ohio. It was probably sometime in 1960, that Dad considered purchasing Harry's personal car -- a 59 Star Chief 4 door sedan in Sunset Glow and Cameo Ivory with the Sunset Glow interior. When Harry pulled up in front of the house, I thought it was the most beautiful car I had ever seen and when Dad took it for a test drive, it was absolute heaven. Unfortunately, the pursuit of a new home took precedence over a car and Harry's car had quite a few miles with the 40+ mile daily commute so Dad didn't buy it. Two other 59 Pontiacs also received consideration though -- a 59 Catalina Vista in Dundee Green and Cameo Ivory and a solid Shoreline Gold 59 Bonneville Vista. A 59 Buick LeSabre 4 door hardtop ultimately won out and I've been a Buick Club member since 1973 and a long time Buick enthusiast. But the 59 Pontiacs remain a personal favorite. I hope you won't mind if I check into the site on occasion and can recount a couple of additional 59 Pontiac stories later on if I have bored you to death. Best wishes on your website that's dedicated to a fantastic automobile.

Personal experiences with these old cars is priceless. My mom was 1 year old in 1959 and my dad was 4, so I have no experiences like you do. I look forward to hearing from you in the future. I love these old stories.

Do you have a 1959 Buick? Let's hear some B-59 stories also!!!

Thanks for your kind words, Robert. OK, here's a little more personal 59 Pontiac history. The man who owned the house that my parents bought owned a 59 Bonneville convertible in Cameo Ivory with the Sunset Glow interior. Unfortunately, even though the car was two years old at the time, it wasn't very well cared for. In my teen years, we also had an elderly lady on our street who received care from a nurse. Ruth, the nurse, drove a 59 Star Chief 2 door sedan in Jadestone Green with Cameo Ivory roof. Even though 4 doors were my thing, I loved viewing the car on a regular basis. Finally, when I was 14 or 15, and this would make it 1964 or 65, one of the local Ford dealerships took in a Sunset Glow with Cameo Ivory roof 59 Star Chief 4 door hardtop. This was and still is my dream car. I remember the car vividly still as it sat in the second or third row and had some light body damage to the left rear door and quarter panel but I looked well past that and wished I had been able to save that car. Obviously, it didn't happen. Even though most folks might have preferred Bonnevilles over Star Chiefs, I guess my history with Harry Hill's sedan had ruined me for life. I really like the stars on the rear doors and quarters and the way the theme was carried into the interior. And for me, there is only one color, Sunset Glow and the Vista roofline was far more desireable than the sedan so there you have it.

No, Robert, there are no 59s currently in the stable but in addition to the 59 LeSabre that became my first car in 1969, I did have a 59 collector. I owned that one from 1976 through 1985. It was an Electra 4 door sedan in Turquoise with gray interior, factory air and 20k, one owner miles. It was a beauty but I decided to go a different direction and the car wound up in Hawaii. I have no idea whatever happened to it.

You have a great memory! I like the Star Chiefs because of the stars also. I don't care for the Bonneville interior as much as the Star Chiefs or Catalinas.

Wow, so you've had 2 1959 Buicks!!! There's another great site Buick-59.com. Talk about Buick nuts!!! Those guys know everything and want anything B59 related. Great guys.

Oh no no I was just kidding because mine is the same color combination he was talking about. My Star Chief was sold new right here in Chico Ca. from Jack Heskett motors.
