On August 31, 1959, the 1960 model Pontiacs began to roll off the assembly lines at the various plants throughout the Country. Back then, the factories would close down from 4 to 6 weeks for the changeover to the new models. That means that this week or next, marks the 50th anniversary of the end of production for our beloved cars. Incidently, production of the 1959's began on September 11, 1958. A little sad that the Division that produced these and many other great automobiles is coming to ...

I just read Collectible Automobile April 1999, sent to me by my friend Rich Gibbs that 97.2% of '59 Pontiacs were Automatics and 76.2% had power steering and 70.4% had power brakes. I thought that was some pretty interesting stuff.

Makes it even weirder that my car was a 4 door hard top Star Chief, manual steering, manual brakes, no AC but an automatic tri power car. WTF????

I'm starting to tire shop so I will have new rubber on the road come good weather. Anyone have a suggestion where to look? Bias vs. radial? White wall vs black or red line? How about what came on it originally for size? I have a '59 Star Chief 4dr. sedan.
I am headed to Carlisle at the end of April. May be able to find something there and save some $.

Four 1959 Pontiac Strato Chief's were sold by General Motors, South Africa. One went to Kenya, one to Rhodesia/Zimbabwe and two were sold in South Africa. All were blue with a white top. I have one. Four door, hard top straight six engine, power brakes and steering. It spent all its life in the Khalahari desert therefore it is totaly rust free. 478 228 miles on the clock.I intend to restore this rare beauty back to it's original glory. Somebody told me these Pontiac's were manufactured by Holden ...
